April 22, 2009 Game 14 Preview

New York Mets (6-7) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (9-5)
Busch Stadium, St. Louis. 72 degrees and sunny.
John Maine (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Joel Pineiro (2-0, 5.40 ERA)

The Mets head into this game coming off of two straight losses, including a particularly rough one last night at the hands of these very St. Louis Cardinals. It is hard to point any fingers last night because no particular player did worse than mediocre. Oliver Perez looked decent but stumbled (and probably should have been given the opportunity to get that last out in the fifth), the hitting was good but disappeared, and the bullpen was mediocre (I can forgive Putz, he's been outstanding). The discouraging part of all this is that the Mets appear to be a mediocre team, not the elite team they've been touted as.

Moving on, tonight John Maine is looking for his first win. He has looked decent at times this season, but has yet to put up a quality start. The key for Maine will be how he handles the Cardinals the first time through the order, as he has struggled early in each of his first two starts this season.

Another big thing for the Mets tonight will be the offense. The have been seemingly unable to hit with runners in scoring position thus far, and will need to turn that trend around at some point. They're not gonna win games if they keep leaving all their ducks on the pond.

On another note, I enjoy the 8:15 start. I don't have to rush to a TV at 7, which is constantly an issue.

Let's Go Mets!
